Land of High Passes
In the mountainous North West region of India, the state of Ladakh is strategically significant as it shares its borders with both China and Pakistan. Widespread infrastructure development threatens to damage the land's fragile ecology, so members of the predominantly tribal and Buddhist population are demanding special powers - in line with other Northern Indian states - to safeguard their interests regarding the land’s natural resources and infrastructure. Known as the 'Sixth Schedule’, they feel this would give them not just a right but a responsibility to conserve their climate, forests, rivers, and glaciers.
